Do I need to be in shape or athletic to start BJJ?
Not at all. Training BJJ will develop you physically. You will notice significant gains in Strengh, Fitness, Flexability, Balance and Co-ordination, without the boring routine of gym wieghts and rowing machines.
I am quite small, is BJJ still suitable?
BJJ is a system that uses leverage and technique over size and strengh, your size shape or gender will not matter.
Will I get hurt?
Remember, in all forms of Martial Arts or even any form of contact sports there is always the risk of getting hurt or injured.
BJJ has no striking, it's a combat form of achieving a dominant position from which you can apply joint locks or chokes allows the other to quit or "tap out" when they feel any discomfort or pain.
This helps BJJ become one of the Martial Arts that puts, you, in more control than most. That allows you to stop when ever you feel the need, before any pain or injury can occur.
Am I too old to start BJJ?
One of the founders of BJJ, Helio Gracie, trained till the age of 94. The highest rank of Grand Master is established only after holding a black belt for 48 years min.
A blackbelt can take an average of 10-15 years. So as you can see, no matter how old you are, you are never too old to start training BJJ.
AS A WOMAN DO I HAVE TO TRAIN WITH MEN?
As a form of self defence for Women, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is possibly the most efficent. Fighting off your back, against larger or stronger opponents, techniques are designed to use leverage to either "sweep" your opponnent off you, or attck back with numerous incapacitating, joint locks or chokes.
The best way to develop these skills for a "real life" situation is to simultate these possible scenarios as close as possible in a safe environment.
There are Women already training at Next Generation, so if you still feel uncomfortable, you can partner up together.
What equipment do I need?
To start with, Shorts, T-shirt and a towel will suffice. Should you wish to train in the traditional kimono, known as a GI, then you will need a GI for these classes.
