WHAT IS BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or “BJJ” as it more commonly known, is a none striking form of Martial Art, combat sport and self defence system, that focuses on grappling and ground based techniques.
The BJJ concept, of techniques based on leverage, not strength, opens learning to everyone regardless of physical shape, size or gender.
BJJ is also the fastest growing sport worldwide. Competition is based on both, a points system rewarded for positional dominance and submissions holds. Competition is categorised by weight and experience and is held both in the traditional kimono “GI” or without “NO-GI”.
For self defence, a trained BJJ martial artist cant take an aggressor or assailant to ground, establish a dominant position and end the confrontation, quickly and efficiently. Avoiding the need to strike or take strikes a BJJ martial artist is also just as effective from their back. This is why BJJ is recognised as both, the most effective self defence martial art today, as well as the gentle martial art. Utilised by police, soldiers and the S.A.S.
From the younger ages 4 - 11 yrs old, submission holds are carefully and slowly introduced into the program in safe, controlled, step by step stages. The emphasis being on position over submission, with strict supervision from coaches.
WILL TRAINING BJJ ENCOURAGE MY CHILD TO BE MORE AGGRESSIVE?
No. It is established early on in our classes that BJJ, is for self defence and sport only.
We discourage any use of BJJ outside the gym, unless required to defend themselves or loved ones. Even then, in the worst case circumstances, we encourage students to always prevent or remove themselves from any situation that may lead to physical altercation, where possible.
Our kids program also incorporates “ANTI BULLY”, “STREET SMART” AND “STRANGER DANGER “ elements, to ensure all our students are given the best knowledge and tools to keep themselves safe from harm.
WHAT HEALTH BENEFITS DOES BJJ OFFER?
BJJ is an all body workout without the kids even realising they are working.
Techniques will develop all muscle groups as well as improve their AGILITY / FLEXIBILITY / BALANCE / COORDINATION / STRENGTH swell as general fitness through conditioning and repetition.
As well as physical benefits, BJJ will develop mental attributes such as SELF CONFIDENCE / DETERMINATION / RESILIENCE & TEAM WORK.
Techniques have been designed to be fully effective, regardless of size, strength and shape, although through regular training, BJJ will certainly develop all of theses areas.
WHAT EQUIPMENT IS REQUIRED?
Primarily shorts and a T-shirt are sufficient, although as the kids develop their skills, a traditional “GI” and white belt will be required in order to earn stripes and higher belts through gradings.
